SnapSceneNY has always believed in doing things with intention. What typically begins as a single workshop has officially grown into something much bigger. This year, SnapSceneNY is proud to share that we have expanded our offerings to now include full workshop series within a New York City public school. And today’s session was our most interactive experience to date.

This workshop was led by SnapSceneNY’s lead photographer, Zoom of Zoomatic Visuals, and the energy in the room was undeniable. Attendees were not just listening. They were actively engaging, asking thoughtful questions, and exploring photography hands on in a way that made the learning experience come alive.
Participants were able to work with a wide range of equipment, from point and shoot cameras to DSLRs and mirrorless systems. They explored stabilizers and experimented with lighting setups ranging from ring lights and clip on LED lights to professional strobes such as the AD200 and AD400. For many students, this was their first time handling professional grade equipment, and the excitement was evident throughout the room.

What made this workshop especially meaningful was the storytelling that accompanied the technical instruction. Zoom shared his personal journey of migrating from Jamaica and how developing a strong creative eye allowed him not only to stand out, but to build a thriving career. His story resonated deeply with several attendees who shared similar backgrounds or experiences. It was a powerful moment that highlighted how our differences can often reveal just how much we have in common.
In keeping with SnapSceneNY’s commitment to access and inclusion, a translator was present to ensure that language was never a barrier to participation. Every participant deserved the opportunity to fully engage, ask questions, and absorb the material, and we were intentional about creating that space. We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Ms. Urena for providing translation services.
The workshop was so engaging that the school’s principal and assistant principal joined in for part of the session, participating in hands on activities alongside the attendees. Their presence reinforced the value of creative education and the importance of experiential learning in school environments.

Participants received custom workbooks to support the session and participated in interactive activities including Q and A and Spot the Difference exercises designed to strengthen their visual awareness. The experience concluded with each attendee taking their own individualized photograph, followed by opportunities to photograph one another. The result was confidence, pride, and a deeper appreciation for the creative process.
Snap Scene takes great pride in giving back to the community. Founder Iya is born and raised in New York City and is also a product of the New York City public school system. This work is personal. These workshops are not just educational offerings, but a tribute to the system that laid the foundation for her growth and success.
The impact of the session extended beyond the classroom. Zoom and Iya were invited back to participate in the school’s Career Day, opening the door for continued conversations around creative careers and professional pathways.
Snap Scene is a Department of Education approved vendor and is currently accepting bookings for single workshops, multi session workshop series, full photography and media courses, as well as photo booth services for school events and activations.

We believe education should be engaging, inclusive, and rooted in real world experience. Today’s workshop was a reflection of that belief, and we look forward to continuing this work across New York City schools.
Lastly, we extend our sincerest thanks to Mrs. White for trusting Snap Scene and believing in our shared vision.
